About the speaker:

Teng Fei is currently a lecturer in the School of Philosophy at Renmin University of China. She obtained her PhD from Utrecht University in The Netherlands. She has been a visiting scholar at Université Catholique de Louvain in 2013. Teng is currently directing a research project titled "A Study of Climate Justice from the Perspective of Ecological Civilization," funded by The National Social Science Fund of China. She has also actively participated in many other international research projects. Her research interests include ethics of science and technology, environmental philosophy and Confucianism.

Abstract:

Human activities have profoundly altered the Earth's system since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. Scientists have proposed defining a new geological era, the Anthropocene, to describe the increasingly humanized and de-natured natural world. In this context, the pressing task for contemporary environmental ethics is to reconstruct or explore norms and values to address a set of new questions. This lecture attempts to introduce Confucianism as a virtue-based approach to environmental ethics, comparing it to Western perspectives. Additionally, it aims to explore the alternative stance of Confucianism in addressing some problematic environmental moral issues raised by climate change.
