Marxist Philosophy

The Department of Marxist Philosophy was one of the earliest of such departments established after the founding of the People's Republic of China. It continues to be at the forefront on a range of topics, including the principles of Marxist philosophy, the history of Marxist philosophy, the sinicization of Marxist philosophy, historical materialism, foreign Marxist philosophy, and Marxist political philosophy.

Chinese Philosophy

The Department of Chinese Philosophy is one of the first institutions in China to provide doctoral and masters’ degrees in Chinese philosophy. It was established in the mid-1950s and its research covers a wide range of topics, including ancient Chinese philosophy, modern and contemporary Chinese philosophy, comparative philosophy between China and the West, traditional Chinese culture and modernization, and more.

Foreign Philosophy

The Department of Foreign Philosophy is a prominent institution in its field. It excels in and holds a leading position in China especially in ancient Greek philosophy, Medieval philosophy, Renaissance philosophy, early modern philosophy, German classical philosophy, phenomenology, modern French philosophy and analytical philosophy. The Chinese translations of The Complete Works of Aristotle and The Complete Works of Immanuel Kant have received wide acclaim. It has played a significant role in the development of the discipline of foreign philosophy at Renmin University of China.

Ethics

The Department of Ethics was established in 1960. Professor Luo Guojie, the founder of the discipline, was a pioneer and founder of the study of modern Chinese ethics. Renmin University's Ethics department was among the first to be approved by the State Council's Academic Degrees Committee to provide master’s degrees in 1981 and doctoral degrees in 1984. In 2000, it was recognized as a Key Research Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences by the Ministry of Education and the National Center for the Study of Ethical and Moral Development was established. The Center includes research on Marxist ethics, Chinese ethics, Western ethics, applied ethics, bioethics and global folklore and culture.

Religious Studies

The Department of Religious Studies is a prestigious center for research on religion and education in China and internationally, consistently ranking as one of the leading institutes. It is the only program in China that is ranked among the top 50 globally in the field of religious studies. The program excels in the study of Buddhism, Christianity, and sociology of religion.

Philosophy of Science and Technology

The Department of Philosophy of Science and Technology is cross-disciplinary, with a wide range of research areas that include philosophy of science, philosophy of technology, philosophy of nature, STS (science, technology, and society), and the history of scientific thought. The department focuses on the innovations and developments of science and technology and their impact on human society.

Aesthetics

The Department of Aesthetics is one of the earliest of such departments established in China. It focuses primarily on the areas such as aesthetical theory, Chinese aesthetics, Western aesthetics, comparative aesthetics, and applied aesthetics. The department is renowned for its expertise in aesthetical theory, the history of Chinese aesthetics, the history of Western aesthetics, and cross-cultural comparative aesthetics, and it is considered one of the best in these fields in China.

Logic

The Department of Logic primarily concerns formal logic in its curriculum. Over time, the program has been enriched to encompass various areas, including mathematical logic, dialectical logic, the history of Chinese logic, and the history of Western logic. It offers a comprehensive range of courses.

Political Philosophy

The Department of Political Philosophy was established in 2012. It is the first teaching and research department in China that specializes in political philosophy. This program grants both master's and doctoral degrees in the field of political philosophy. Its primary research areas include Chinese political philosophy, contemporary Western political philosophy, and Marxist political philosophy.

Philosophy of Management

The Department of the Philosophy of Management was established in 2004. Since 2005, it has offered masters’ and doctoral programs, thereby being the first program in China to offer graduate-level studies in this area. Its research areas include theories of the philosophy of management, Chinese philosophy of management, Western philosophy of management
