Abstract: 

It is well-observed that the concept of free will is closely related to the concept of moral responsibility in western philosophy. Depend upon the metaphysical view and normative theory adopted by a philosopher, she/he may take different approaches when it comes to clarify the connection between free will and moral responsibility. These approaches include determinism, libertarianism, and different versions of compatibilism. Confucius ethics seemingly provides us with a well-developed account of moral responsibility in the absence of free will. How should we understand Confucian account of moral responsibility? Can it be properly characterized as any approach similar to its western counterparts?

About the speaker:

Tian Jie (TJ) is currently an associate professor at Renmin University. Received PhD degree in philosophy from University of British Columbia (Canada). Her research and teaching interests lie at the intersection of philosophy of mind and action, political philosophy, and moral philosophy.
