About the speaker:

Yao Xinzhong is Professor of Ethics at the School of Philosophy with expertise in comparative philosophy and has published a number of books on Confucianism and other traditions.

Abstract:

Dao is one of the fundamental concepts in Chinese metaphysics and cultural life. This lecture will examine the meanings of Dao ranging from the beginning of beginnings to concrete ways of doing things either naturally or consciously. It will pay particular attention to the differences between Daoist and Confucian understandings of Dao, and to the influences Dao has exerted over the Chinese ways of living, thinking and behaving from a transcultural perspective.
