About the speaker:

Chenyang Li is a professor and the founding head of the philosophy department at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore. He is the author of Reshaping Confucianism (Oxford, 2023), The Confucian Philosophy of Harmony (Routledge, 2014), The Tao Encounters the West (SUNY, 1999), and of over 100 journal articles and book chapters. His edited volumes include The Sage and the Second Sex (Open Court, 2000), The Virtue of Harmony (with Dascha Düring, Oxford, 2022), Harmony in Chinese Thought (with Dascha Düring and Sai Hang Kwok, Rowman & Littlefield, 2021), Chinese Metaphysics and its Problems (with Franklin Perkins, Cambridge, 2015), Moral Cultivation and Confucian Character (with Peimin Ni, SUNY, 2014), The East Asian Challenge for Democracy (with Daniel Bell, Cambridge, 2013). He was President of Association of Chinese Philosophers in North America (ACPA), President of International Society for Chinese Philosophy (ISCP), and an inaugural Berggruen Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioural Sciences in Stanford University.

Abstract:

I will first differentiate two senses of making Chinese philosophy world philosophy. Then I argue for three points. The first is on the need to make Chinese philosophy world philosophy. The second point is that comparative philosophy is the most effective way to study, examine and develop Chinese philosophy as world philosophy. I will clarify two approaches to comparative philosophy and emphasize an often-neglected approach. The third point is that, in order to promote Chinese philosophy as a world philosophy, we should not historicize philosophy.
