About the speaker

Li Kelin, Wu Yuzhang Distinguished Professor and Doctoral Supervisor at Renmin University of China. Her main research areas include contemporary French philosophy and comparative Chinese-Western aesthetics. She is the author of the monograph Deleuze's Theater of Philosophy (The Commercial Press, 2022) and has published dozens of articles in Chinese and international journals such as Social Sciences in China, Philosophical Research, Literary and Artistic Studies, and Yearbook for Eastern and Western Philosophy.

Abstract：

I will examine the conceptual history of “art” in modern Chinese intellectual discourse, tracing how the Western category of Art—rooted in Kantian aesthetics and the European Renaissance tradition—was translated, mediated, and ultimately transformed as it entered Chinese thought. We will see at the end that the modern Chinese “art” is neither a pure import nor a simple survival, but a genuine historical synthesis between two fundamentally different conceptual worlds.
