School of Philosophy

The School of Philosophy, Renmin University of China was founded in 2005. Its predecessor was Department of Philosophy which was founded in 1956. It is one of the largest centers for philosophy in the world and one of the strongest in China, with an international reputation for excellence in both teaching and research. At present, the faculty consists of 75 members, including 41 full professors, covering a vast range of subjects within philosophy. The present dean is Professor Hao Lixin, concurrently the Assistant President of Renmin University.

The School is a national base for education and research in philosophy. It is a key base of "Project 211" and "Project 985" in philosophy and social sciences, sponsored by Chinese Ministry of Education. The School was approved as a class A disciplinary unit authorized to grant doctoral degree and set up post-doctoral workshops.

It includes the Center for Ethics and Moral Construction and the Institute of Buddhism and Theory of Religious Study, which are key research bases for humanities and social science sponsored by Chinese Ministry of Education. The Institute of Confucian studies is also a key base of Renmin University.

The School is highly research-oriented and at the same time it is dedicated to the teachings of philosophy at many levels. It sponsors three undergraduate major programs; M.A. and Ph.D. graduate-level work; and summer institutes in religious studies and philosophy. The members of the School share in their commitment to the highest standards of intellectual integrity and together celebrate their rich tradition.

Achievements

More than 10,000 students has graduated from the School of Philosophy, which has undertaken more than 100 national and ministerial research projects, and won many national and ministerial awards for teaching and research achievements. As a prestigious center of philosophy in China, it has reached great achievements in the past century, and will have a promising future in the 21st century.
